Comments on the Finalist
Beyond simply demonstrating how virtual reality serves as a means to explore memory and visions of the future, KINGDOM employs 3D digital space, images from VR headsets, and the shared space between audience and performers to transport everyone into a meticulously choreographed memory space characterized by a never-ending process of compression and decompression through shifting viewpoints and the design of a seemingly infinite stage, floating in a (private) digital kingdom that is constantly collapsing and being reconstructed. This work relies heavily on the performing team’s high level of coordination, with live sound and visual effects precisely synchronized with the performers’ onstage states. Meanwhile, performers wearing headsets need to enhance their sensory engagement to respond to live audiovisual cues. This exemplifies the fruit of their longstanding collaboration. Artwork Introduction
KINGDOM is an experimental extended reality (XR) performance that explores interdisciplinary co-construction, inviting audiences to revisit overlooked, discarded, or eliminated everyday objects amid the digital flood. This work combines 3D scanning and motion capture technologies within virtual reality (VR), using multiple on-site screens and the dancer’s bodily vocabulary to create an uninhabited digital kingdom from fragmented, liquefied, and incomplete scanned objects, continuously adapting to new perceptions and environments in a digital space that is constantly disintegrating and reassembling.
About the Artist
CHAO Ting-Ting is a performing artist and a collaborating member of Anarchy Dance Theatre. With a background in contemporary dance, her work emphasizes interdisciplinary creation at the intersection of dance and new media. Her projects center on the body, integrating digital technologies such as motion capture and 3D scanning to explore the possibilities of digital performing arts through interdisciplinary collaboration. Using the dancing body as a starting point, she investigates how bodily performance transforms and extends through the intervention of digital media, paying close attention to the relationships among virtual environments, avatars, and socio-cultural dimensions.
Founded in 2010, Anarchy Dance Theatre derives its name from the transliteration of the English word “anarchy.” Its creative core is contemporary dance, which it uses to reflect on how human beings are connected to one another. It also integrates technology to delve into philosophical questions about the relationship between humans and technology, as well as the potentials and limits of its use. Centered on bodily awareness, it strives to transcend traditional theatrical forms and explore themes of time, space, objects, and the interaction between humans and society. Its works include theater, dance technology, and installations, and in recent years it has been a frequent presence at major international dance and art festivals.
